Leading with a Teaching Gift

Posted on December 17, 2011 by HGC Staff

From Ken Love, HGC Transformation Coordinator and Lead Pastor of Grace River Church

Most pastors have a teaching/preaching gift.  Some have a leadership gift.  However, a church needs leadership, so what’s a pastor to do?  The truth is that leadership gifts come in many colors. It is also true that people can use a variety of gifts to lead.  If a pastor has a teaching gift that is shinier than the leadership gift, here’s a strategy that might help.

1.      Read and study leadership.  Teachers typically “leak out” what they have been reading.  Reading and studying leadership will raise the leadership awareness and likely have it leaking through conversations, meetings, and presentations.

2.      Create opportunities to teach leadership.  Utilize the gift in gatherings of potential leaders and/or anyone who will listen.

3.      Teach the leadership of Jesus from the pulpit.

4.      Understand the vision as something to be taught. Focus on the vision several times a year to bring it into focus by teaching about it.

If the Lord has called you to a pastor role you must learn to lead.  The greater your leadership ability the greater your impact.  Leaders can have some natural gifting but the rest of us can choose to pursue developing our leadership to our fullest capacity.  At HGC we want to empower you in every way possible to reach your zenith for Christ.  Lead well with whatever gifts you have been given!
